On the way to St Paul’s Lutheran Church Parish camp this afternoon with my daughters, we were stuck in traffic because of this: Flying Wheel kills man in Freakish Freeway Collision. One feels great sympathy for the family of the man who was killed.
Ironically, the accident happened on the other side of the freeway (the inbound) from that on which we were travelling (the outbound). But the traffic was still banked up on the outbound also all the way back to the city (twenty kms?), so that it was “stop-start” all the way to the Point Cook turn off. In fact, there was absolutely no physical obstruction to our side of the road. The only thing that caused the slow down for us was the fact that traffic was slowing at the point of the accident to sticky-beak at the spectacle on the other side…
I heard about this terrible accident on the radio tonight. Sad to say, David, I experienced this phenomenon many times when I used to travel daily to work on the Ipswich Mortorway in Brisbane. I can’t understand why people stop to gawk. In my life I have inadvertently witnessed the results one or two fatal accidents, and it is not something that I would voluntarily submit myself to, let me assure you.
On a brighter note, am I to understand that your daughters still attend a Lutheran Church?
Oh sure. Lutheran Parish, Catholic School. Don’t forget that Mum is still a Lutheran. And I am still fairly involved at St Paul’s Box Hill. I call St Paul’s my “church-in-law”. The kids are quite aware of their Lutheran identity, but also pray the Hail Mary, the Rosary, the Angelus, prayers for the dead, attend Mass (but don’t commune), and, of course, love the Pope. They are very strange Lutherans. A bit like me.
Mmm…that mix must lead to some interesting conversations with their pastor.
well, it might – but hasn’t yet. Their pastor wpould need to be a brave man…
