Spengler = David P. Goldman

Okay, so while at the capital of the world (ie. Rome), I was rather out of touch with the Internet (which is, of course, THE meeting place of the world…) and so missed out on this bit of new (actually, its a two-piecer):

1) The commentator-previously-known-as-Spengler has outed himself. He is David P. Goldman. If you want to know more about who David P. Goldman is when he is at home, click here. (The Gypsy Scholar also gives a link to some bright spark who worked Spengler’s identity out correctly twelve months ago, so I guess the game was up anyway. I mean, how many people are there who think that Franz Rosenzweig is the key to Christian/Jewish/Muslim relations?). The big surprise is that Goldman is a card-carrying, practicing Conservative Jew, and not some sort of Christian Zionist as many thought.

2) The next bit of news is that Goldman is now Associate Editor of First Things magazine. Joseph Bottum, the Editor in Chief, writes in the latest Public Square column:

The first to join us in the office is a new associate editor, David P. Goldman. …he has been writing popular weekly columns for the Asia Times, all published under the pseudonym “Spengler.”… After a few years’ acquaintance, we convinced him to emerge from his pseudonym and join us full-time at First Things.

So First Things is claiming the credit for Spengler’s decision to come out?

Just one more thing to prove that we live in interesting times.
