As we were coming out of mass today, it began to snow. It didn’t last once it hit the ground down here, but we (Mia and I) went for a drive up the hill to Sassafras to take in the strangeness of the experience.

We didn’t stay up there long, because the snow was falling fairly heavily, and the roads were getting very slippery – the usual Sunday crowd plus the extra sightseers like us were slipping around on the road and I could see a disaster happeing before long. Any way, it was cold too, and (surprise for those of us who are not familiar with this stuff) wet.

When Maddy came home from her friend’s place a few hours later we went back up so she could see the snow too – but by then it had almost all melted.

No matter. There was still enough to make a snow man. What is it about snow that brings out the “idol-making” streak in our nature?

Being a North of the Equator type my entire life, travels and all, snow in August is amazing to me!

Growing up in Minnesota though, seems like a pretty light snow — it ain’t snow unless you measure it in feet, not inches.

The older I get though, the less amazing it is, period. Crocodile Dundee (my grad school roomie) used to talk about hitting the beach for Christmas (he was from Hobart originally, moved to Melbourne, went to an LCA parish with his Norwegian American Lutheran wife, gadzooks, maybe your parish!)

I guess I’ll come during Winter here — unless I move to San Juan or maybe Miami and just forget the whole thing first. It’s 80F about noon in Omaha right now, about average, great day. Didn’t see anything after mass. Then again, didn’t go to “mass”. They aren’t saying it at Pius X down the street anyway.

    Great pix!

Where are you? Is Sassafras in the Dandenongs?

It looks a lot like Tasmania!

Yes, Sassafras is just “up the hill” from our little community. It snows about once a year up there. Actually I thought the snow was falling fairly heavy, but that just goes to show ya I am more used to sandy beaches than snowy mountains!

Hmmm. We were promised snow to 100m today by the weather gods at the BoM, but it seems not to have materialised. We are at 70m here and should’ve been able to take a little walk up the hill to have a bit of tobogganing, but no…

    Snow makes the chill worthwhile.
