Mons. Les Tomlinson appointed Auxiliary Bishop for Melbourne

Bishop-Elect Les Tomlinson

Bishop-Elect Les Tomlinson

The following memo was received by all Archdiocesan Staff by the Archbishop this morning.

I am pleased to advise you that Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Monsignor Les Tomlinson as Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne.

Monsignor Tomlinson, 65, has been Vicar General of the Archdiocese since 2003, and previously was Parish Priest of Ormond, Rowville and Carlton. He has ministered in parishes in Victoria and Tasmania since his priestly ordination on 18 August 1972.

He has been involved in a number of diocesan bodies, and is currently the Spiritual Advisor to the State Council of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Victoria.

I am most grateful to Pope Benedict for the appointment, which shows his care for the people of Melbourne.

Monsignor Tomlinson is a highly esteemed collaborator who is exceptionally generous in the service of priests and people alike.

The ordination of the new Bishop will take place at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Wednesday 17 June 2009 at 7.30pm. The appointment was announced in Rome at 12 noon, Tuesday 5 May 2009 (8.00pm AEST).

Yours sincerely in Christ,
+ Denis J. Hart
Archbishop of Melbourne
6 May 2009

Sentire Cum Ecclesia congratulates Bishop-Elect Tomlinson, and rejoices with those who rejoice. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer and more deserving bloke. As the Lord says in the scriptures “Well done, good and faithful servant”, and as they say in the classics, “All things good come to those who wait”.
